with some holes in the stocking testifying to some moths or something nibbling away at it at some point--unless it was a hole-y stocking to begin with

So specifically and lovingly rendered in inlaid wood, with finely incised lines for their manes I have to think these were two much loved particular horses, and that the box was made, perhaps by a husband for his wife, who loved these horses very much.
